Functional Medicine
Caring for and maintaining the body’s health is an act of integrating treatment methods, not separating them. At Integrative Optimal Wellness, we prioritize a method of functional medicine that treats the unified system of your body.
MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW how poorly they feel until they feel better. In fact, most of us don’t recognize that aches and pains, fatigues, digestive problems, headaches, allergies, and more are not just annoying symptoms. they are early signals from our bodies that impending diseases can disable us and make life more difficult than it really needs to be.
We practice a new model of medicine – Functional Medicine: addresses the underlying cause of disease, using a systems-oriented approach both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership.
It an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms.
Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each indiviual.
Functional medicine is Evidence -based. It is based on the latest research from peer-reviewed medical journals, and uncorrupted by corporate and political interests. It is not profit-driven nor based on outdated research and heavily influenced by profit-driven pharmaceutical and insurance companies.
Functional medicine is Investigative. It treats symptoms by addressing underlying cause of the problem, which leads to more profound and longer lasting results. It is not superficial. It doesn’t mask or suppress symptoms.
Functional medicine is Holistic. It treats the body as an interconnected whole, and recognize the importance of these connections in health and disease. It isn’t dualistic – viewing the body as a collection of separate parts, each of which has its own doctor (i.e. cardiologist, podiatrist, etc.)
Functional medicine is Patient-centered It treats the patient, not the disease. treatments highly individualized based on patient needs. It isn’t designed to treat a disease. In fact, patients with the same disease may need different treatments depending on their underlying causes.
Functional medicine is Integrative The approach combines the best of both modern and traditional medicines and importance on diet and lifestyle. It is not limited, relying almost exclusively on drugs and surgery, in spite if their risks and complications.
Functional medicine is Safe Treatments have mild or no side effects, and other unrelated complaints often improve spontaneously. It is not dangerous with serious side effects or complications.
